Thomas Newton Crouch (1900-1977)

Who is Thomas Newton Crouch?

Thomas Newton Crouch as a young boy

Thomas Newton Crouch was born on July 19, 1900, in Atkins, Arkansas, as the third child of Susannah Belle Gillum, age 27, and Isaac Newton Crouch, age 49. He died on December 20, 1977, in Modesto, California, at the age of 77.

Other children of Susannah Belle Gillum and Isaac Newton Crouch were William Monroe Crouch (16 Jan 1892 – 25 November 1958), Theo Myrtle Crouch (5 Aug 1895 – 28 May 1906), and Joseph Ray Crouch (1910 – 16 Sep 1936).

Thomas Newton Crouch was born in Pope County, Arkansas near the present day town of Atkins. He was the third generation born there. His maternal great great grandfather was William Burnett (4 Oct 1774 – 5 July 1855) who was an early settler in the area before statehood and has a township named after him. William Burnett’s father, John Harrison Burnett (1750- Oct 1778) died at Valley Forge (PA) from an illness while serving with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. (Thomas Newton Crouch [1900-1977] -> Susannah Belle Gillum [1872-1966] -> William Perry Gillum [1843-1923] -> Frances Howard Burnett [1804- abt 1865?] -> William Burnett [1774-1855]).

His sister Theo Myrtle died on May 28, 1906, in Hughes, Oklahoma, when Thomas Newton was 5 years old. She is buried in the Gerty Cemetery (Hughes County) in Oklahoma near her father Isaac. Rumor is that she died as a result of boiling water spilling on her while the laundry was being done.

Thomas is found in the 1910 US Census in the state of Oklahoma, county of Hughes, township of Newburg, district 0111, page 5a, in dwelling number 86. Also listed is his father, mother, older brother Monroe, and younger brother Joseph.

The father of Thomas Newton Crouch, Isaac Newton Crouch, passed away on June 29, 1912, in Oklahoma at the age of 61. The obituary says he was kicked by a horse and died the next day. The mother of Thomas later married William Adolphus James (1857-1936)

WWI Draft Card

Thomas is found in the 1920 US Census in Oklahoma, county of Pottawatomie, township of Davis, District 0208, page 2a, as a lodger in dwelling 25, working as a flour packer at a flour mill. He is living with Ed and Pearl Long. Pearl is the daughter of Thomas’s step father William James. Also in the house is Thomas’ aunt Tennie McConnell, the older sister of Thomas’ mother Susannah.

Thomas Newton Crouch married Myrtle Scott (1903-1988) in McLoud, Oklahoma, on September 27, 1921, when he was 21 years old. They had 10 children together.

His daughter Viola C was born on June 25, 1922 in Okalhoma.

His daughter Zona Marie was born on June 13, 1924, in Fresno, California. The family had recently moved to California to look for work since Myrtle did not want Thomas working in the mines in Oklahoma.

His daughter Dorothy Allene was born on October 6, 1925, in Fresno, California.

His son Thomas Newton (Jr) was born on March 14, 1927, in Fresno, California.

His daughter Pauline was born on October 19, 1928, in Fresno, California.

His son Richard Lee was born on May 8, 1930, in Fresno, California.

His son George was born on March 13, 1932, in Fresno, California.

His son Paul was born on October 7, 1935, in Fresno, California.

His brother Joseph Ray died on September 16, 1936, in Fresno, California, when Thomas Newton was 36 years old.

His daughter Joyce May was born on May 29, 1938, in Fresno, California.

Sometime in the late 1930s, Thomas went into partnership with another man and bought a truck. Myrtle did not want Thomas to join the union. One day while waiting at a facility to drop off a load of grapes, the truck in front had Thomas move in closer. Then a second truck pulled in behind him boxing him in between the two trucks. Then both trucks started to take parts off as if they were doing repairs. This caused Thomas to be stuck and not able to deliver the load of grapes before they spoiled. As a result Thomas was liable for the cost of the load and had to file bankruptcy. The union members had succeeded in reducing the number of non-union drivers by one.

His son Donald was born on October 8, 1942, in Fresno, California. Donald was reported to be a special needs child in that he was ‘slow’ in his mental capabilities. He died on 5 Apr 1957 near French Camp (San Joaquin County, California) when several boys dared him to jump in some water. He did not know how to swim and became entangled in submerged debris. All of the rest of the children of Thomas Newton Crouch reached adulthood.

His brother William Monroe died on November 25, 1958, in Fresno, California, when Thomas Newton was 58 years old.

His mother Susannah Belle passed away on January 21, 1966, in Fresno, California, at the age of 93.

In 1971 Thomas and Myrtle celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary with a large family gathering at their home. One of Myrtle’s cousin, Dan Barker, brought a book showing the genealogy of the Barkers back to the early 1800s. Being a history buff, this fascinated me, the writer of this blog, and lead me to starting my genealogy research in the late 1990s.

Thomas Newton Crouch died on December 20, 1977, in Modesto, California, when he was 77 years old. He was buried Acacia Memorial Park in Modesto.

James Monroe Crouch (1820-1904)

Summary: When James Monroe Crouch was born on July 3, 1820, in Washington County, Tennessee, his father, John, was 25 and his mother, Nancy, was 22. He married Alvina Jane Milburn in November 1840 in Greene County, Tennessee. They had nine children together prior to the death of Alvina in 1898. He died about 11 October 1904, in Whitfield, Georgia, having lived a long life of 84 years, and was buried in Whitfield, Georgia.

James Monroe Crouch was born on July 3, 1820, in Washington County, Tennessee. His most likely parents, based on DNA (Barron and Jobe) matches, are Nancy Barron, who was 22, and John Crouch, age 25. He may have had an older sister, Sarah, who was born in 1818. The records of the marriages of Nancy Barron is confusing with Benjamin Epperson marrying a Nancy Barron in 1816 and then John Crouch marrying a Nancy Epperson in 1818. The birth of Sarah from her headstone appears to be a month before John and Nancy married. More questions to find answers to before this can be verified.

His sons were both captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi in July 1863. Joseph Larkin shows up in future rosters with Company K of the 1st Georgia Reserve as Larkin Crouch. Neither son has been found in records after the civil war, grave markers, or through DNA matches, so it is most likely they both died during the war. Note that James Monroe Crouch’s father in law was a chaplain in the Union Army and his brother in law (Alvina’s youngest brother) was in the Union Calvary.

James Monroe Crouch had a daughter in January 1864 named Melissa Caroline “Callie”. Callie married John J Gilbert (1863-1917) on 15 Dec 1885 and lived in the Whitfield County area of Georgia most of her life. They had eight children prior to her death on 08 February 1938. James Monroe Crouch Ancestry

James Monroe Crouch was born in Washington County, Tennessee on July 3, 1820. The earliest documentation for him is his marriage license to Alvina Jane Milburn in neighboring Greene County, Tennessee. During the Civil War he stated he was from Washington County, Tennessee when the state of Georgia reorganized their militia in 1864. More detail on James Monroe Crouch will be provided in a separate blog dedicated to him.

I have not found any definitive paper proof of his parents yet. However at the end the Revolutionary War, five Crouch brothers and their parents migrated to Washington County. The parents were John Crouch ( 1720-1815) and Sarah Barbary (1729-1782), the five sons were

(1) Joseph Crouch (1749-1830) who married Margaret Sandford,

(2) John Crouch (1756-1840),

(3) Jesse Crouch (1760-1841) who married Mary Sarah Nance,

(4) James B Crouch (1768-1855) who married Agnes Denton, and

(5) Elijah Crouch (1770-1825) who married Mary Ellis.

All of the above is provided by several people but the source data has not been researched in depth yet.

There are multiple people with the name of James Crouch born in Washington County in the early 1820s. The paper trail has not been fully investigated yet by me but a planned future trip to Tennessee will hopefully resolve the issue. However, looking at the DNA from one of the sons of Thomas Newton Crouch (great grandson of James Monroe Crouch) shows at least nine DNA matches (between 7 cM and 17 cM) with people who claim to be descendants of the siblings of Nancy Barron who is attributed to have married John Crouch in 1818 (son of Jesse Crouch (1760-1841) above. There are also matches with some of the Nance family, providing further proof that James Monroe Crouch is likely the son of John Crouch and Nancy Barron, and the Grandson of Jesse Crouch and Mary Nance. Due to the possibility that there are other family connections between the Barrons and Nances prior to Jesse Crouch (1761-1841) this can not be definitive. A search of the paper is needed for that. However this will be the assumed lineage for future blogs until the paper trail proves the validity of this claim.

As a side note, A Y DNA test by the grandson of Thomas Newton Crouch shows that the paternal line of James Monroe Crouch connects with a Canadian Crouch family that traces their ancestry back to a John Crouch (1624-1699) who lived in Bedfordshire, England. This DNA match provides a possible ancestral family and location where the Tennessee Crouch family might have descended from.

Please contact me if you have any further information that will help me resolve the conflicts seen in the Tennessee Crouch family lineage.
