James Monroe Crouch was born in Washington County, Tennessee on July 3, 1820. The earliest documentation for him is his marriage license to Alvina Jane Milburn in neighboring Greene County, Tennessee. During the Civil War he stated he was from Washington County, Tennessee when the state of Georgia reorganized their militia in 1864. More detail on James Monroe Crouch will be provided in a separate blog dedicated to him.
I have not found any definitive paper proof of his parents yet. However at the end the Revolutionary War, five Crouch brothers and their parents migrated to Washington County. The parents were John Crouch ( 1720-1815) and Sarah Barbary (1729-1782), the five sons were
(1) Joseph Crouch (1749-1830) who married Margaret Sandford,
(2) John Crouch (1756-1840),
(3) Jesse Crouch (1760-1841) who married Mary Sarah Nance,
(4) James B Crouch (1768-1855) who married Agnes Denton, and
(5) Elijah Crouch (1770-1825) who married Mary Ellis.
All of the above is provided by several people but the source data has not been researched in depth yet.
There are multiple people with the name of James Crouch born in Washington County in the early 1820s. The paper trail has not been fully investigated yet by me but a planned future trip to Tennessee will hopefully resolve the issue. However, looking at the DNA from one of the sons of Thomas Newton Crouch (great grandson of James Monroe Crouch) shows at least nine DNA matches (between 7 cM and 17 cM) with people who claim to be descendants of the siblings of Nancy Barron who is attributed to have married John Crouch in 1818 (son of Jesse Crouch (1760-1841) above. There are also matches with some of the Nance family, providing further proof that James Monroe Crouch is likely the son of John Crouch and Nancy Barron, and the Grandson of Jesse Crouch and Mary Nance. Due to the possibility that there are other family connections between the Barrons and Nances prior to Jesse Crouch (1761-1841) this can not be definitive. A search of the paper is needed for that. However this will be the assumed lineage for future blogs until the paper trail proves the validity of this claim.
As a side note, A Y DNA test by the grandson of Thomas Newton Crouch shows that the paternal line of James Monroe Crouch connects with a Canadian Crouch family that traces their ancestry back to a John Crouch (1624-1699) who lived in Bedfordshire, England. This DNA match provides a possible ancestral family and location where the Tennessee Crouch family might have descended from.
